A place apart

Photographs from Cuba

Over the last 58 years Cuba has been a place apart. Only a few miles separate Cuba from Key West, Florida but the life could not be more different.

The recent death of Fidel Castro and the opening process with the USA will probably change the situation over the next years and this place will not exist as it is much longer.

"A place apart" is based on two trips I took to Cuba in 2011 and, recently, at the end of 2016 and it is a visual representation of Cuba, far from any political or photojournalist approach.

Cuba to me is a great mix of sadness and hope, joy and condemnation, lights and shadows.

Cultivo una rosa blanca
en junio como en enero
para el amigo sincero
que me da su mano franca.

Y para el cruel que me arranca
el corazón con que vivo,
cardo ni ortiga cultivo;
cultivo la rosa blanca.
