Mermaid Parade, Coney Island
The Mermaid Parade is the largest art parade held in the United States. It takes place in Coney Island - New York - and it is a celebration of ancient mythology and honky-tonk rituals of the seaside.
It is was founded in 1983 and since than it showcases every year over 3.000 creative individuals in an attempt of creating an entertainment allure in a tough neighbourhood such as Coney Island.
There are no ethnic, religious or commercial aims behind the Mermaid Parade and it can be seen as an American version of the summer-solstice celebration. During the parade participants dress in hand-made costumes and they are voted by a jury.
The Mermaid Parade attracts hundreds of photographers who usually takes posed pictures. In this gallery I tried to let the reader immersing in the real atmosphere of the backstage before the beginning of the parade.
