CONEY ISLAND: WHERE MAGIC HAPPENS (2015-2016)

Coney Island is a magic place where I like to browse around when I am in New York. Every year - around mid-June - there is a great event taking place in Coney Island: the Mermaid Parade.

The Mermaid Parade is the largest art parade held in the United States and it is a celebration of ancient mythology and honky-tonk rituals of the seaside.

It is was founded in 1983 and since then it showcases every year over 3.000 creative individuals in an attempt of creating an entertainment allure in a tough neighbourhood such as Coney Island.

There are no ethnic, religious or commercial aims behind the Mermaid Parade and it can be seen as an American version of the summer-solstice celebration. During the parade participants dress in hand-made costumes and they are voted by a jury.
